Words
Words are very powerful. I used to believe the statement: “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me.” was true, but it’s not. Words may not hurt in a physical sense, but in a spiritual/emotional sense they can leave some very nasty wounds that eventually can turn into scars. A word said to someone in a hateful way can really hurt. When a child at school is called names or teased, it can really hurt. Although the people who are saying the words aren’t physically hurting the child, they are wounding him emotionally.
A careless word can do a lot of damage. Something said that wasn’t meant to be offensive can and often will be taken in an offensive way. Sometimes this is how relationships are torn apart. One person takes what the other said in an offensive way and that person begins to get mad. Sometimes they will retaliate with a hurtful word, which in turn makes the person who offended them in the first place mad. If something is not done about it, eventually the relationship will dissolve. That is why it’s so important to guard your mouth and choose your words carefully. If somehow an offending word were to get out and make someone mad, go to them and ask them why they are mad then ask for their forgiveness.
In other ways words are very powerful in a very good way. The Lord spoke the earth and everything on it into existence. His word is powerful and lasts forever. The Bible, His word, has lasted since the beginning of time, before time began, and will continue on forever.
Pretty powerful huh?
