To Trek or not to Trek?

spock_kirk_1024Yup I’m a Trekkie. I love me some Star Trek. I grew up watching the ‘Original Series’ and ‘Next Generation’ so whenever a new movie comes around I must go see it. The last one wasn’t bad but not what I had expected so I didn’t know really what to expect when they popped the news they were making a prequel. I was thinking “Crap this movie is gonna suck monkey nuts big time!” but surprise surprise! It doesn’t! It’s funny how sometimes movies I think will suck turn out to be rather the opposite. Not that I mind. :P

They did a pretty darn good job with finding a cast that resembled the prior cast. They made Kirk a tad more like-able I think, Bones was pretty much spot on, Scotty was great too. The others were ok, didn’t stand out in any way but they didn’t ruin them either, and one in particular that they kind of botched in my opinion but I’ll touch on that in moment. The special effects were amazing and the design for the Romulan ship was trippy. It reminded me of a really strange squid, though how it was build on the inside kind of baffled me as to why they would have so many walk ways with no kind of railing. Maybe they just like to see their people fall to their doom? XD
Anyways, the storyline was interesting and threw in enough twists that it kept you thinking. Though how it played out didn’t really feel like a Star Trek film and you’ll only understand that if you have seen the series or the previous movies. It was very action packed and well written though! Don’t get me wrong it just didn’t seem like one that belongs in the Star Trek line other than the characters were there.

star_trek_2009-spock_and_kirk1Which brings up my main beef with this film, Spock. He’s my favorite character out of the old series and in this movie he just wasn’t Spock. The actor they got for him was great, looked very much like the older actor, ‘Spock Prime’ as they called him in the credits, but the way the wrote him into the script he just wasn’t Vulcan enough. In the series he was always cold and emotionless, or so he thought, and in this film they played way too much on his emotion. He wasn’t cold enough for Spock. I can understand the part where he is a child and he has emotional outbursts but as an adult in the film he was too emotional. The other thing that made me go “WTF” was his relationship with Uhura. When did this happen? Why? WHY did they need that? Bah just doesn’t fit in my opinion. I’m not a purist but Spock is NOT supposed to have a love interest. Though I really enjoyed seeing Leonard Nimoy appear in it for a bit.

Ok now that that is out of my system… Overall it was a good movie, a great summer flick and an ‘OK’ Star Trek movie. I think it turned out better than I thought it would but they still could have done a little better on certain aspects to keep it more in tune with the old series. It’s good to catch it on the big screen for the special effects, and it’s even worth going to cinema just for the story. I don’t recommend it to hard core trekkies, but those people need lives anyways, but someone who enjoys Star Trek or even ones that don’t might like it. I know several people who never saw the old ones go to this one and enjoy it.

So that’s it for now. I’ll get back into blogging a bit more often I hope and maybe post up more wips from time to time or post some animation related shiz.
