Stardust
So a while back I heard about this movie called “Stardust” and it looked pretty good. I had already gotten the soundtrack and thought it was quite fab. So I went ahead and grabbed the movie, and was not disappointed. It’s a fun movie, the characters are entertaining and the actors are pretty good. This film is more in the spirit of “The Princess Bride” except not quite a silly funny, so if it’s a “Lord of the Rings”-esque story you’re looking for don’t go for it.
Anyways, months after I saw the movie I found out, from a friend, it’s based off a book. He just so happened to have checked the book out at the library so loaned it to me. I’ve not read much in the last couple years just because most books I’ve tried to read wind up boring me. This one is one that hasn’t, it’s quick and easy reading as well. I have to say the movie follows it pretty darn closely to it. I’m over half way through and from what I remember all of it was in the movie. The only issue I have with the book are some of the adult scenes. I thought the book was basically a kid’s book or at least young adult. I mean in the movie they had one scene but it was cut away and didn’t show much, eluded to and then left it up to your imagination what happened next.
However in the book that one scene is quite graphic. For such a lighthearted story it really breaks up the flow of the book in general. This one scene in particular could have been touched on like they did in the film but the author didn’t need to go into detail for it. This is a case where a movie toned down sex! *gasp* It IS an important part of the story but… the graphic part could have been left out.
Anyways, so far I’m enjoying the book. It’s fast reading and the story is quite enjoyable. If it weren’t for the few unneeded scenes I’d give it four stars out of five. Maybe check it out sometime, or at least the movie, if you enjoy fantasy. I’ll be sure to update this with my thoughts on the ending.
